Don't take food from strangers
by Duncan MacKellar

I was flying along by the jetty
And stopped to rest on a wall.
A boat tied up with a catch of fish,
They wanted some help with the haul.

A sailor said, "Hello pelican!
How would you like some mullet?"
He threw me a piece and I danced a jig
As it disappeared down my gullet.

They said they had more than plenty
As they brought it all ashore.
But the more I kept on eating,
The more I kept eating more.

I ate and ate until I saw
The way the sailor frowned.
My bill was filled with so much food,
I couldn't get off the ground.

The sailor wasn't a fisherman,
The sailor was a pirate.
He didn't own the fishing boat,
He didn't even hire it!

It was all a trick, a sneaky plan,
I saw it in his eye.
He was trying to catch a pelican,
To put in a pelican pie.

I flapped my wings and tried again,
As hard as I could try.
And then at last I flew away,
Until I reached the sky.

The lesson learned upon that day
Is one I'll always heed.
Don't take food from strangers
And don't give in to greed!
