Alone with a bone
by Duncan MacKellar

Betty and Bill have gone out for the night
And left me at home unattended.
I'm here all alone but I've got my bone
So really, I'm not offended.

My job is to howl if I hear a strange noise,
To growl or even to bite.
I'm in charge but I'm not very large,
So I'm glad they left on the light.

What I enjoy is a walk in the park,
Trees always make me feel lucky.
If it rains people huddle but I find a puddle,
I like to get all wet and mucky.

When I was young they tried teaching me tricks,
Like fetching slippers and such.
I was only a pup, so I chewed them all up,
But now they don't bother me much.

It feels like I've been here for hours,
I suppose that's why I got bored.
I hope they won't mind, the torn cushion and blind,
Or the broken vase they adored.

It won't be long now before they're home,
With a tricky question or three,
About who ate the cake and that juicy steak,
I found and had for my tea.
