The diagramless crossword you are about to attempt is similar to a
standard US style crossword except in this puzzle there are three
main differences:

1. You start with a blank 17x17 grid and are required to fill in the blank
cells yourself. See

2. The clue numbers in the upper left corners are not filled in, so you
have to figure out which cells are the correct ones and write in the clue
numbers in small print.

3. The word lengths are not given.

Here are some hints to help you solve this type of puzzle:

The completed grid will form a pattern with diagonal symmetry, which
means if you rotate it 180 degrees the black and white cells will look the
same. This information is useful because if you know there is a black cell
four rows from the top and three columns from the left then there will also
be one four rows from the bottom and three columns from the right.

There are no words less than three letters long, so any cells of one or two
spaces in length can be filled in.

Every white cell forms part of an Across and a Down answer, so there are
no single cells.

Each time you figure out where a black cell goes, remember to fill in a
diagonally symmetrical cell so you eventually build up to the correct pattern.

Good Luck!
